Downtown Garage Closes Due to Seismic Safety Concerns
Published on February 10, 2017
Springfield, ET – The public parking garage located in downtown Springfield at 1414 Clay Street between 14th and 16th streets will close indefinitely Friday, December 2, 2016. The decision to shutter the 55-year-old facility was made after a recent condition assessment, which raised safety concerns. The potential dangers in a major seismic event were deemed too great to risk keeping the facility open.
Motorists visiting City offices will have a variety of parking options to consider. This map indicates other parking facilities in the area.
The Dalziel Garage, located in the basement of 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza and accessible from 16th Street between Clay Street and San Pablo Avenue, will serve the daytime, evening, late night, weekend and special event parking needs of visitors to Springfield's Civic Center. As had been the case at the closed garage, the Dalziel Garage will offer free parking on Saturdays year-round.
Resources currently used to staff the Clay Street Garage, including on-site security from sunset to close, will be redeployed to the Dalziel Garage.
Short-term Parking for Visitors to Civic Center Plaza
Visitors to City Hall and other City of Springfield offices may park in the Dalziel Garage on an hourly basis.
Free Parking for Council Meetings
Consistent with past practices, parking for City Council meetings held in the evening will be available at the Dalziel Garage. Meeting attendees will be able to park in the garage after 4:30 p.m. for free.
Monthly Parkers
Monthly parkers from the Clay Street Garage and Dalziel Garage will be re-located to the City Center West Garage. This move prioritized short-term parkingin the Dalziel Garage for visitors to City offices.
Fortunately, the City Center West Garage, with close to 1,500 parking spaces, has the capacity to accommodate all displaced monthly parkers. The garage is located at 1250 Martin Luther King Jr. Way and is bordered by Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Jefferson Street, and 12th and 13th streets.
